An unsealed wood fence in the Rio Grande Valley goes grey in about a season. That grey is not just cosmetic — it is the surface of the wood breaking down under UV, and once it starts, water gets in more easily and rot follows.
Stain does two jobs at once: it puts the colour back and it puts a barrier between the wood and the two things trying to destroy it here, which are sun and moisture. It is the cheapest thing you can do to a fence and the most often skipped.
Prep is the whole job. Stain applied over dirt, mildew or a wet board sits on top instead of soaking in, and it comes off in sheets a year later. We wash, we let it dry properly, and we do not start on a day when it will not.
New fences are worth a word of warning: pressure-treated wood needs time to dry out before it will take stain at all. Sealing it too early looks fine for a month and then fails. If your fence is new we will tell you when to come back rather than take the money now.
